What You’ll Learn

This immersive, hands-on experience accelerates your learning by giving you the confidence, clarity, and practical skills that typically take months to figure out on your own. In this workshop, you’ll engage all your senses as you learn and practice the techniques and procedures essential for making high-quality biological amendments. Engage with expert mentors live and in real time as you monitor piles, analyze samples, and discuss strategy with your teammates. Become best friends with your microscope and gain proficiency at identifying the different organisms you see under the lens.

A year’s worth of experience in just 2 weeks:

  • See behind the curtain as you learn to source and store compost materials under various constraints and in different locals
  • Construct a SFW thermophilic compost pile from scratch with experts from across the globe there to guide
  • Gain leadership skills as you navigate and organize group compost building and turning by hand
  • Diagnose issues real-time on failing piles, and gain experience in how to turn one around.
  • Small and large scale compost tea brewing
  • Complete and analyze a nematode extraction from a sampling of the materials you helped produce
  • Applied Microscopy in a real-world setting with an expert by your side to help identify what you are seeing and accelerate your learning curve

  • Create custom compost recipes, then test several from beginning to end

Intensive Program

This is a 10-day workshop with a weekend off in the middle. The dates are June 15-26, 2026. Please be prepared to absorb a lot of valuable information and to develop the skills you need for success.

Small Group Size

There are only 20 places available for this workshop, so you’ll get plenty of contact time with the members of the training team with whom you will be working.

Team Learning Environment

You’ll work in a small team throughout the workshop on multiple tasks. You’ll also have time to relax and socialize with the other students on the weekend in the middle of the workshop.

Delvin Solkinson

Lead Permaculture Instructor

Community gardener, student and teacher from British Columbia, Canada, Delvin has done a Permaculture Design Certificate, Diploma and Masters Degree with Bill Mollison, the co-originator of Permaculture. He has taken many in-person programs including 13 advanced courses and 14 teacher trainings with Permaculture elders like David Holmgren, Rosemary Morrow, Larry Santoyo, Robin Clayfield, Geoff Lawton, Scott Pittman, Starhawk, Toby Hemenway, Looby Macnamara, Michael Becker, Jude Hobbs, Doug and Sam Bullock. Ongoing training included three additional Permaculture Education Diplomas, numerous Permaculture Design Certificate Courses, and an experimental Doctoral Degree with the Permaculture Academy. He is currently a Diploma Tutor with the Permaculture Association and Senior Diploma Tutor with Permakultur Danmark. Delvin has co-taught 27 permaculture design courses over the last 20 years. He is an accredited teacher with Permaculture Institute, Permaculture Association, Permaculture Institute North America and Permaculture Research Institute.

Kavi Reddy

Permaculture Instructor

Kavi Reddy is a permaculture educator and community organizer who constantly actualizes solutions for the benefit of Earth today and in the future. She stumbled upon Permaculture in 2013, earned her PDC in 2017, and has advanced permaculture certifications in landscape mapping, passive rainwater harvesting design, and soil fertility building. Kavi has learned from and taught alongside many Permaculture elders in the U.S. and India including Jude Hobbs, Narsanna Koppula, Clea Chandmal, Robyn Francis, Rico Zook, and Kelda Lorax. Academically, Kavi holds three degrees from UC Berkeley, focusing on the history of agriculture, colonialism, and food systems transformations. Her career spans social entrepreneurship, regenerative agriculture, climate technology innovation, and non-profit management. In her role as Director of Operations at the Soil Food Web School, Kavi builds programs and partnerships that further access to regenerative ecology & soil fertility education around the world. In her personal life, Kavi loves teaching Permaculture & Regenerative Thinking to middle & high school students at her alma mater The Athenian School in the Bay Area, CA.

Ecologist, Certified Ecological Restoration Practitioner (CERP)

Ecologist Paul Morris is an expert in botany, ecosystem restoration, and regenerative farming, with over 27 years of experience. He is a Certified Ecological Restoration Practitioner (CERP) with the Society for Ecological Restoration, and his extensive experience in restoration ecology and conservation biology makes him a leader in the design and planting of restoration areas.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is open to all current SFW Students. A prerequisite for attendance is completion of FC3 and familiarity with the contents of FC4 (to ensure you have a good understanding of the microscopy techniques we’ll be applying at the workshop). You will not be required to complete the quizzes in FC4 if you have not yet done so, but you will need to watch all the videos in FC4. Attendees will also be required to complete an online pre-workshop training course.

The workshop will take place at the Isha Yoga Center in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India, a peaceful destination situated at the foothills of the Velliangiri Mountains, approximately 30 kilometres west of Coimbatore. Surrounded by nature and home to an international community, the center offers a calm and supportive environment for immersive learning, personal growth, and meaningful connection. Terms and Conditions

  1. Students must have completed Soil Food Web Foundation Course 3 (FC3). Students who have not completed Foundation Course 4 (FC4) are required to watch all the lectures in FC4 before you attend the workshop, but you will not be required to have taken FC4 quizzes (we’ll set you up with a special pass so you can skip the quizzes, email [email protected]). This is to ensure that you have a good understanding of the microscopy that will be used at the workshop.
  2. Students must pay the workshop fee of $6,499 in full.
  3. Students are responsible for obtaining their own travel, medical, and medical evacuation insurance they require or desire before attending the workshop.
  4. Completion of the online Pre-workshop Training Course.
  5. You will be required to attend Safety Training and to sign the “Workshop Handbook” on or before day 1 of the workshop. 
  6. It is your sole responsibility to check whether you need a visa to travel from your home country and whether your passport allows you to enter and stay in the United Kingdom for the workshop.

  2. Completion of all four of the Foundation Courses (FCs) and the Soil Microscopy Course.
  3. Students who are joining the workshop but have yet to successfully complete all the FCs and/or the Soil Microscopy Course may do so after the workshop.

  1. All students are required to make (at home) one compost pile with a minimum size of 200 gallons/760 liters to use for Field Trails, that meets the minimum biological requirements as set in the Course Manual. Ensuring these standards are met helps provide a strong biological foundation for effective soil regeneration.
  2. Students will need to perform a Remote Assessment of their compost to demonstrate that it meets the minimum biological requirements for solid compost.
  3. All students will be required to pay the enrollment fee for Field Trials, if they have not already done so.
  4. Once the quality of the student’s compost has been verified, the student will be able to enroll in Field Trials and will be assigned to an Instructor/Mentor who will guide them through the process of correctly preparing for their final project.
  5. Once the quality of the student’s compost has been verified, the student will be able to enroll in Stage 3 and will be assigned to an Instructor/Mentor who will guide them through the process of correctly preparing for their final project.
  6. If students need additional support with preparation of their compost for use in Field Trials, they can consult an Instructor/Mentor for assistance.

You will have an in-depth and immersive learning experience that includes the production of 8 compost piles by the group, over a 10-day period. You’ll learn from compost piles that are designed to succeed and others that are designed to fail, so that you can understand the principles and mechanics at play. You will also conduct nematode extractions and protozoan infusions, and you’ll make a compost extract and a compost tea at the workshop. In addition to this, you’ll be using your microscopy skills to assess the compost and liquid amendments, at key stages. This applied microscopy is an invaluable experience.

The workshop will take place at the Isha Yoga Center in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India, a peaceful destination situated at the foothills of the Velliangiri Mountains, approximately 30 kilometres west of Coimbatore. Surrounded by nature and home to an international community, the center offers a calm and supportive environment for immersive learning, personal growth, and meaningful connection. Coimbatore is well connected by air, rail, and road, with taxis and direct bus services available to the center.

Most international participants will need a valid passport and an approved Indian visa or e-Visa before travelling. For an e-Visa, your passport should generally have at least six months’ validity and two blank pages, and you may be asked to provide proof of onward or return travel and sufficient funds for your stay. Coimbatore International Airport is an approved entry point for e-Visa holders. Applications should normally be submitted through the official Indian government visa portal at least four days before arrival, and travellers must wait until their Electronic Travel Authorization has been granted before travelling. Requirements and the appropriate visa category may vary depending on nationality, so all participants should confirm their individual requirements before booking flights.

There will be many Q&A sessions throughout the workshop to ensure that all your questions will be answered.


Yes. As a student attending the workshop, you will be assigned an instructor to work with you in a small group of 4-5 people. Your instructor will work closely with you to review compost recipes and the trajectories of all 8 piles that you will monitor. Your instructor will also answer questions throughout this two-week intensive workshop. In addition to working with your group of 4-5 people, you will also have the opportunity to meet and work together with other students in larger groups.

There will be many live Q&A sessions scheduled throughout the workshop to ensure that all your questions are answered. We will also have a wrap-up session on the last day of the workshop to answer any remaining questions.

The workshop will be delivered by a highly experienced team of Instructors. The mentor line-up is subject to change.

No, attendees are not permitted to join the workshop late or leave early. As this is a two-week intensive, it requires that you attend all ten days and participate fully in all activities of the workshop. Weekend activities are optional.

The Soil Food Web Complete Practicum (SFW Practicum) is an advanced, mentored program designed for students who have completed the Foundation Courses and are ready to move from theory to hands-on practice. It’s science-grounded and built around real land, real challenges, and real goals, guiding students to read, build, feed, and work with living soil over a full growing season.

The Practicum is organized into four core modules:

🔬 Soil Microscopy – Build the skills to observe the life in your soil and assess biological health to guide every management decision.

🌿 BioComplete™ Compost Production – Learn to create compost that is alive and tailored to your soil’s specific needs.

💧 Biological Liquid Amendments – Design and brew site-specific liquid amendments to introduce and multiply beneficial biology.

🌾 Field Trials – Apply your knowledge and techniques over a full growing season with mentor guidance, directly on your own land.

This workshop provides an alternative pathway through the Practicum by giving you hands-on experience, guided instruction, and practical tools that align with the Practicum’s objectives. By participating, you receive BioComplete™ Compost Production, and Biological Liquid Amendments. Please note that to graduate Biological Liquid Amendments, Soil Microscopy needs to be completed before or after the Workshop.
